- October 23, 1895 – Emilio Jacinto wrote the essay Gising na, mga Tagalog. It urged the Filipinos to unite in defending the country's honor and dignity.
- October 23, 1898 – After holding off for some time the offensive of revolutionaries led by Teodorico Novico and following a series of surrenders in the country, the Spanish colonial forces in Baler, Tayabas surrendered to the Filipinos.
- October 23, 1944 – General Douglas MacArthur restored the Philippine Commonwealth in Tacloban, Leyte with Sergio Osmeña as President.
